CSIR India design first Highwall Mining in India

India’s domestic energy requirement is met by coal combustion to the extent of about 60% and there is a great need to substantially increase the coal production to meet the needs of the growing economy. Many mines are reaching pit limits and expansion of current opencast mines is often difficult. Highwall mining is a new technology used in Australia and the USA which can extend the life of opencast mines without disturbing surface dwelling. The CSIR India is instrumental in adapting this new technology for Indian geomining conditions by providing scientific extraction design for the first two Highwall Mining sites in India.
