Four thematic focus areas were identified by the participants, highlighting innovation for a digital future.

These are:
  1. Education and knowledge transfer, for example, increasing literacy rates, increasing access to knowledge, e-learning, improved interface and training and educational support
  2. Accessibility, for example, addressing challenges in terms of appropriate infrastructure provision and interface localisation
  3. Local content and applications addressing the need for the development and promotion of electronic content focussed on local needs and challenges
  4. Sustainable environmental management with specific reference to food security and biodiversity, for example, improving quality of life, improving management of natural resources, mitigating environmental impact and better management of biodiversity.

These link to five projects:
  • The development of a GRA Digital Futures Database that could eventually be enhanced into a knowledge management system
  • E-Readiness Study and a Roadmap on Accessibility and Local Content
  • ICT for Innovation in Rural Education in Developing Countries
  • Digital Futures for People and the Integrated Landscapes in which they live
  • Component of Biodiversity Digital Library
